Being deeply understood and heard is the first access point to soothing depression. In therapy I ensure you recieve genuine empathy and compassion, find the origins and triggers of your depression, assess if there is a biochemical component, encourage you to get medication relief if you wish. I guide you to look at the beliefs about yourself and the world, your body and breath, your stregnths and talents. We work on opposite action; something to counter depression. I also provide CBT, EMDR and DBT interventions. Together we form a relationship with your depression, so it is not in charge, but you are.
Mood is fleeting and often situational arising from an irratant, a biochemical reaction like hunger, or everwhelm. Some of us are more "moody" than others. Depression is much more pervasive and is on a continuum from mild to more severe, episodic, short term or longterm, subtle to distiurbing. It is a state of being that slows the body, mind and spirit. Depression alters our perspective, disregulates or numbs our feelings, plays havoc with our perceptions of how we see ourselves, others, our situation, our upbringing. It can take us away from our best selves and hinder acess to our attributes at times. Sometimes we lose joy in what we appreciate or do. Depression can be a manifistaion of early trauma that needs our attention. It can also be biochemical induced condition. Depression is nothing to be ashamed of, but often we are. And afterall, no one asks for depression to visit and interfere with our living.
